Habitat:

Dirinaria applanata grows on the bark of trees and can be found in both North and South America. In North America, it is mostly found in the Southeastern United States and is present from sea level to the beginning of mountain ranges.

History:

First described in 1970 by the Journal of the Indian Botanical Society.

Structure:

The upper surface of D. applanata is usually described as bluish-gray, gray, or green-gray. Very rarely are there apothecia present on this lichen, but it does have globular soredia.

Fun Fact!

  • The species Dirinaria applanata is only differentiated from another lichen in this genus (Dirinaria aegialita) by its distinct soredia.
