Habitat:

This lichen can be found on the branches of trees and exposed tree trunks, but very rarely on rocks. It is typically found throughout the Eastern United States.

History:

First described in 1860.

Structure:

P. perforatum has extremely ciliated lobes and numerous apothecia that vary in size and shape. The lobes' upper cortex is green-yellow while the lower cortex is white with a rough appearing texture.

The photobiont layer is green and the medulla is brown with scattered rhizines that help attach it to its substrate. The edges of the lobes are only lightly attached while it is moderately attached to the center of the lichen.

Fun Fact!

-The genus Parmotrema is also known as the ruffle lichens, due to their lobes having lifted edges, similar to ruffles on fabric. This particular lichen is commonly known as the perforated ruffle lichen.
